CULTURE WITH CAPITAL LETTERS in Puente Viesgo - "Conferences on Prehistory" and "Originarte".

As is traditional in the summer cultural panorama of Puente Viesgo, we highlight two events that are implicit in the summer in Puente Viesgo: the Lecture Series on Prehistory and the Originarte Music Days

XXXV SERIES OF CONFERENCES ON PREHISTORY

Puente Viesgo, and more specifically the Cave Art Centre, hosts the Cycle of Conferences on Prehistory, organised by the Association of Friends of the Caves of the Castle, which this year reaches its XXXV edition and continues to be a reference point within the cultural panorama, both at regional and national level. The level of the lecturers and their content is very high thanks to the personalities, historians, archaeologists, professors, etc, who give the lectures, which can be enjoyed every Wednesday, in the C.A.R. Alberto de Mónaco, on the way up to the caves of Monte Castillo, at 19.30 hours, with free seating until full capacity is reached. It is advisable to come well in advance.

The Sociedad de Amigos de las Cuevas del Castillo awards prizes to people who have contributed to the dissemination and promotion of the prehistoric cultural heritage of the region.

The Puente Viesgo Prehistory Cycle maintains this year its usual format of 13 conferences, being the next one on July 23rd given by Miguel Ángel Sánchez, PhD in Geology from the University of Cantabria (UC), with the title “The Costa Quebrada Geopark and the Paleolithic coast”.

The expert in rock art and head of archaeology for the Junta de Extremadura, Hipólito Collado, will be in charge of closing the five initial conferences scheduled for the month of July with one on the 30th on “Evidence of symbolic behaviour in the Rising Star cave system in South Africa”.

The emeritus professor of the University of Cantabria, Manuel González Morales, will be the first speaker in August with a talk on the 6th entitled “The idea of equality in Palaeolithic societies”, followed by another on the latest research in the Ardines Massif (Ribadesella) on the prehistoric cave of Tito Bustillo, which will be given by Pablo Arias, professor of Prehistory at the University of Cantabria.

On 20th August, Isabel Moro, PhD in Prehistory from the University of Cantabria, will be giving a talk on “The tourist history of the prehistoric caves of Cantabria; and the following week, Eduardo Palacio, PhD in Prehistory and curator of prehistoric caves, will be in charge of the last event of the month of August, with the conference “The conservation of caves with cave art, the case of the Cave of El Castillo in Puente Viesgo”.

Ana Belén Marín, PhD in Prehistory from the University of Cantabria and director of the European project Evoadapta, will start the month of September on the 3rd with a conference on the “Prehgastro Project: from prehistory to the plate?”; and on the following Wednesday, Diego Gárate, also PhD in Prehistory from the University of Cantabria, will give a talk on “Contemplating images, sharing ideas: Graphic recurrence in caves with Palaeolithic parietal art”.

Roberto Ontañón, director of the prehistoric caves of Cantabria and the MUPAC (Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria) will be the penultimate speaker this year on 17 September with a talk on the Cantabrian museum: “The new MUPAC, from project to reality”.

On Wednesday of the following week, 24 September, José Manuel Maíllo, director of the archaeological excavations of the El Castillo cave, will close the thirty-fifth edition of the Puente Viesgo Cycle with the conference “Culture, territory and symbolism of the first humans in the north of Tanzania”.

ORIGINARTE
And this summer, Originarte, arrives at its fifth edition in a spectacular setting in the gardens of the Town Hall of Puente Viesgo starting at 19.30 with free admission until full capacity is reached.
As the highlight of this third edition, on Sunday 20 July, the musician and producer STEVE KRASE, one of the most valued harmonica players on the Texas blues scene, will be one of the most interesting dates of the summer.

The rest of the Sundays do not detract from the previous ones and will feature the following line-up:

Sunday 27 July: LOST PREACHERS

Sunday 3 August: CLAUDIO & THE ROOSTERS

Sunday 10 August: JIMMY BARNATÁN

Sunday 17 August: CT POWELL

We have to assure that this fifth edition consolidates a musical festival of quality and that it will be every year of greater weight in the musical panorama of Cantabria and Puente Viesgo always of the hand of the Town hall of Puente Viego, who yields his wonderful garden and natural space for the enjoyment of every appointment.

It should be noted that in the event of bad weather, the venue will be the former schools of Vargas, 3 kilometres from the town hall.

Free admission, limited capacity

Concert start time 19.30 - Jardines del Ayuntamiento (in case of bad weather the concert will be moved to the Antiguas escuelas de Vargas).
